TOY and FOOD DRIVE SUCCESS!!
Thank you so much, Blue Willow, for your support in our Annual Food and Toy Drive! We continue to be touched by our community’s generosity. Once again, our bins were filled to the rim with new and unwrapped toys! We also donated a huge box of toys to the Toy Mountain drive.
Earlier this morning, the
Vaughan Firefighters arrived with big smiles and helping hands to pick up all of the non-perishable food items and
unwrapped toys that were donated by our wonderful Blue Willow School Community. Our student leaders were thrilled to help load the Fire Chief's truck and they were especially excited to experience sitting in the fire truck too.
Our
students continue to learn so much through every experience and interaction. This experience truly demonstrated attributes of empathy, responsibility,
initiative and compassion, that will undoubtedly continue to positively influence change in the future.
Thank you to the Vaughan Fire Department for their ongoing support and partnership.
We sincerely thank our community for your involvement, support, and big hearts! You have certainly made the holidays bright for many of our local families in need.

Paint the Holidays Success!!
Paint the Holidays
School Council Community Outreach Event
We were delighted to see so many families who joined us at our PAINT THE HOLIDAYS event at Blue Willow.
Parents and students were very engaged in painting their winter-themed figurine and designed some very colourful keepsakes!
The pottery will be glazed and returned to school before the holidays! We had a wonderful time building community and creating beautiful art together!
Thank you to our Community Outreach - School Council Team for organizing such a fun family event at Blue Willow!

DECEMBER NEWSLETTER
School News
There have been a number of new initiatives and leadership opportunities over the past month at Blue Willow, as we continue to learn and grow. We welcome Ms. Macri (Grade 1/2), who has joined our Blue Willow Family and is committed to supporting student success and well-being.
On November 11, our classes participated in our Remembrance Day Assembly honouring Canadian history and committing to the responsibilities of a peaceful future. Thank you to all of our staff, students and parents for joining our assembly.
Our Healthy School Leaders have launched our PLAY indoors program during winter months for the various primary students led by our trained student leaders. Thank you to our staff who are building student leadership through this initiative!
During the week of November 14-18, Blue Willow participated in Bullying Awareness Week. We have also launched a restorative room, where students can come and speak to an adult about any issues or concerns they may have in building or maintaining healthy relationships.
Throughout the month of November, various grade 2, 4, and 7 classes had the opportunity to engage in outdoor learning activities at Burrlington Outdoor Recreation Centre. Our students enjoyed making connections to their learning, and developed a deeper appreciation for their global citizenship responsibilities.
As global citizens, staff and students continue to work toward reducing, reusing, and recycling waste at our school. Over the past few weeks our student led ECO Team have been actively involved in introducing our new green bin system at Blue Willow. We are encouraging all staff and students to use the green bin for organic compost such as: food waste and paper towels. Simple actions like these will help to further develop responsibility skills and will make a significant difference reducing our global footprint.
Both students and staff also enjoyed wearing their favourite jerseys on Jersey Day, as one of our school spirit initiatives which our student council organized. Our next spirit day is pajama day on December 23, 2016. Blue Willow is participating in the annual toy and food drive from December 5-16. Please donate a new and unwrapped toy and/or non-perishable food item to help us make a child’s holiday season brighter! *All donations will be in support of the Vaughan Food Bank.

Community News
Message From Our Trustee
As we near the end of 2016, I hope everyone has had a great school year so far and found opportunities to get involved with the life of the school.
It is wonderful to have opportunities to see not only what our students are learning, but to see how they are learning – collaborating and problem solving, using technology in exciting new ways, and engaged in hands-on activities.
I want to take this opportunity to thank the dedicated staff members, students, families and community members across our Board. Thanks to all of the great people we have in our system, we continue to advance student achievement and well-being.
Our Board continues to have a strong commitment to creating welcoming, inclusive learning environments that enable all of our students to thrive. Engaging families in your child’s education and the school community is in an important part of creating that environment.
There are resources for families available on our Board website at www.yrdsb.ca/parents, including information on Board programs and supports, and tips for parents to support your child’s learning at home and at school.
Best wishes to everyone for a safe and happy holiday season and a wonderful start to 2017. I hope you are able to enjoy time with family and friends.
