JANUARY NEWSLETTER

Hello January.JPG

School News

WELCOME BACK!!  We hope you all enjoyed the winter holidays with family and friends! We also welcome both Ms. Jain (Grade 1) and Ms. Silberstein (CC) to our Blue Willow Family.

Beginning the day on time is essential to developing healthy routines and fulfilling learning potential. Families are strongly encouraged to support their children to arrive to school prior to the start of our school day at 8:25 a.m.

MATH - MODERN LEARNING - MENTAL HEALTH
This month we continue to build upon our independent student skill sets in all three areas of our York Region District School Board foci: Math, Modern Learning and Mental Health.  Students are engaging in rich meaningful problems throughout all curriculum areas, which support and encourage critical thinking. We value collaborative learning environments where deep, authentic and relevant learning prepare our students to be future ready.  We continue to build strong relationships with staff, students, and our families to build healthy learning environments.  We also continue to support students in solving conflicts in our Restorative Room during recess every Monday and Thursday in the library.

GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP

As global citizens, staff and students continue to work toward reducing, reusing, and recycling waste at our school. Our student led ECO Team are strongly encouraging all staff and students to use the green bin for organic compost such as: food waste and paper towels. Simple actions like these will help to further develop responsibility skills and will make a significant difference reducing our global footprint.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS
During the month of January, we are collaborating with a few of our community partners to further develop Modern Learning and Mental Health strategies. Our Healthy Schools Leaders are organizing leadership schedules to prepare healthy snack bins for every class. Students will now be able to access delicious fresh fruit and vegetables in their classroom at any time.

HEALTHY SMOOTHIES
As part of our HEALTHY SCHOOLS initiative and in collaboration with our community partners META Centre (http://www.metacentre.ca) and York Region Food for Learning (foodforlearning.com), META centre volunteers will be preparing Healthy Smoothies throughout the year for our students to taste and trial. This initiative strives to build awareness of healthy food choices to fuel a healthy body and mind. Each class will have the opportunity to try a healthy green smoothie, and complete a survey to rate the smoothie.  Classes will be notified of their upcoming smoothie date and students will be encouraged to record a reminder in their agendas.

Our Healthy Smoothie recipe was developed in collaboration with our Healthy Schools Public Health Nurse and Nutritionist. Healthy food choices are easy to make at home, and all of the ingredients can be easily found at your local grocery store.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the office at (905) 851-0043.
