Special Education Night at Emily Carr Secondary School

Students who are moving from Grade 8 to Grade 9 often face new challenges, questions and concerns, especially for students with an IEP.

As such, the Special Education Department at Emily Carr S.S. is pleased to offer a
Welcome to Grade 9 Event for incoming students with an IEP and their parents
on May 4 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.

During that evening senior ECSS students will lead a tour and talk about high school with Grade 8 students, while parents receive information about high school and special education support along with a tour of the school.

Grade 8 Opportunity- Register for L1 YRDSB International Language Credit!

Why Study International Languages at High School?
Language is our connection with our community and the world. Through language we identify the world around us, express our concerns and hopes, and share our experiences and ideas.

Learning another language…
* can enhance intellectual functioning
* strengthens first language skills and facilitates learning additional languages
* creates pride in one’s own cultural background and better understanding of other cultures
* enhances career options (source: http://www.ilea.ca 03/11/15)

So what are you waiting for Grade 8s?!
Now is the time to take advantage of this opportunity and register for a Level 1 YRDSB International Language CREDIT course of your choice! We offer CREDIT courses in 13 languages at 4 high schools.

Social Networking Presentation TIPS for Staying Safe

Thank you to our Blue Willow School Council and our TELUS presenters for hosting a very informative presentation on Social Networking Safety.  We engaged in rich learning and conversation about how we can empower ourselves and our children to manage social media safety and privacy features.  Special thanks to our presenters: Joseph and Lorraine, who shared such valuable safety practices and protocols that will help develop critical thinking skills and good judgement for all tech users.

DIGITAL Safety Tips include:
* Lock your phone - set and change passwords regularly
* Don't open attachments from unknown sources
* Use of wireless hotspots - know your security options at public hotspots
* Manage locations settings
* Update system regularly - use firewalls and router security (anti-spyware software)
* Ensure SECURE connections when shopping or banking online
